However, they should not forget that these remedies have been known and used for hundreds of years and have outlasted many a modern chemical drug. These natural treatments are always near at hand and invariably provide help when other remedies fail. They will continue to do so long after many of the present-day products of the pharmaceutical industry have been discarded and forgotten.

No less interesting is the story I heard from a Berlin doctor who was attached to the famous hospital ‘Charite’. A person suffering from haemophilia had to have a minor operation and the doctors were worried about stopping the bleeding. A peasant who was a patient in the hospital happened to hear of their anxiety and when one of the doctors was making his rounds, he told him in his blunt rustic way that he knew of something that would stop the bleeding and was better than all the strong-smelling ointments in the hospital.

The Indians enjoy eating plenty of papaya where they grow, and the white settlers have noticed this habit and copied it. Eating papaya after a meal makes for better digestion. Food rich in protein will cause no problems if you eat papaya, since papain breaks down protein. Being a good observer, you will soon discover that all those who eat papaya remain free from intestinal worms. In fact, all worms disappear when papaya is taken over a period of time. The seeds are especially effective as a remedy and it is recommended to chew some of them every time you eat the fruit. What is the reason for this desirable effect? Research has shown that papain simply digests the parasites made of protein; it not only helps to digest cheese, meat, eggs, and other protein foods in the digestive tract, but also any intestinal worms that may have settled there. It dissolves their protein organisms and destroys them in a simple and harmless way. Papaya could not be better described than as a simple food and an excellent vermicide. Even amoebas are destroyed by the papain in papaya seed as long as they are still in the intestines and have not settled elsewhere.

Because the ripe papaya fruit is perishable it cannot be transported over long distances. However, it was discovered that the unripe fruit, the stems and the leaves contain more papain than the ripe fruit – and this solved the problem of shipping. Obviously unripe fruits can be transported far more easily. Furthermore, the use of the milky juice which contains the most papain suggested itself. Preparations made with this juice aid the digestion and are useful remedies for the elimination of worms – a widespread problem in many areas of the world.

Bathing in the sea has different effects on people. Salt water has an osmotic effect in as much as it draws water from the body. As a result, those people who always have some excess fluid in the legs will feel considerably better after bathing in the sea. Sea water will do the same for them as sea salt packs would do. If you tend to obesity, sea-bathing will usually help you to lose weight, even though you may not eat less. Excess weight and fat can be reduced because the sea stimulates the thyroid and gonads, thus benefiting the entire metabolism. All this is good for the figure and slimness may thus be within reach for some people. Sea air and sea-bathing are beneficial in cases of circulatory disorders, and diabetics will find sea-bathing good for them when they swim a lot and walk along the beach and over sand dunes. When stress and tension threaten your health do something about it quickly: take a holiday by the sea – there is no better remedy. However, while you are away from your work and duties, put them completely out of your mind and do not let the telephone interrupt your treatment. So, no telephone in your hotel room! ‘Switching off is absolutely essential during your holiday if you are to benefit fully from the ‘cure’ the sea can give you.
It was used for seasoning and as a remedy, and Abbess Hildegard of Bingen, Germany, a reputable medieval herbalist and recognised as such even in modern times, recommended savory as a valuable herb.

The common name ‘bean herb’ tells us something about its culinary use; indeed, some cooks maintain that there is no better flavouring for beans. Moreover, if you season vegetables with savory, you will not suffer wind as an after effect. Many good cooks also flavour meat dishes and chicken with aromatic savory.

Anyone suffering from low blood pressure would do well to use savory in addition to hyssop in the preparation of food. This herb was also highly valued in the Middle Ages because it was thought to stimulate the gonads.

People who like sauerkraut will be familiar with juniper berries because they are often added for flavouring. But then what do we do? We pick them out and leave them on the side of the plate. Occasionally they are mentioned in a cookery book as a spice, and it may also be remembered by some that grandfather often used to chew them first thing in the morning. Besides that, juniper berries have been more or less forgotten. Old herbals say that the eagle lives to an old age because it feeds on juniper berries. They contain a delicate essential oil and much sugar, yet they do not taste sweet because their bitter constituents override the sweet ones.

Sufferers from gout and rheumatism find that juniper berries are an excellent remedy because they help to increase the elimination of uric acid by way of the urine.
