EXERCISING YOUR IMMUNE/THE AVERAGE AMERICAN: OVERWEIGHT AND OUT OF SHAPE

An old friend from my Army days in Italy brought her family to visit mine some years ago. At the end of their stay she asked me why were so many Americans fat. And why do they drive around a parking lot six times looking for a parking space right next to the door? Why do they wait five minutes for an elevator rather than walk up one or two flights of stairs? “I think the only time they exercise,” she said, “is when they run to the kitchen during television commercials.”

She’s right. The average American is overweight and out of shape. The average American would rather drive than walk three blocks to a store. And how many times have you been in an elevator and seen people ride up or down only one or two flights?

Like the 42-year-old-banker, most of us have many excuses for not exercising. My personal favorite is, “The dog looks too tired to go walking with me, so I won’t take a walk.” I’ve used this excuse myself plenty of times. That is, I used to.
