CONTRACEPTION AFTER CHILDBIRTH – THE IMMEDIATE PUERPERIUM (INTRODUCTION)
Since the advent of medical methods of contraception in the 1960s, it has been the practice to offer contraceptive advice to women on the postnatal wards. As time spent in hospital has become less, this advice is sometimes offered within hours of delivery! It is hardly surprising therefore that the presence of the well-meaning family planning nurse or doctor is often greeted with hostility, ribaldry, mirth or at best polite interest. Such responses may be reinforced by the attitude of the ward sister who may resent such a visitor as being disturbing to ‘my mothers’. Such an attitude is understandable since it may be difficult for some midwives to really appreciate the importance of family planning, having devoted their whole life to the production of healthy babies.
