CARE OF THE YOUNGER PATIENT – SEXUAL INTERCOURSE FOR A GIRL

The age of consent to sexual intercourse for a girl, at present, is 16 years in Great Britain. It is legally allowable to offer contraceptive advice without parental approval provided the following conditions are met. The doctor must encourage the girl to discuss the matter with her parents if she possibly can, there must be evidence that she is likely to be at risk of pregnancy and she must be mature enough to understand what she is doing. For a fuller discussion of the development of the present legal position, the reader is referred to a useful publication produced by the National Association of Family Planning Doctors (Biddell, 1986), and to the Brook Advisory Centre publication, Under Sixteens: The Law and Public Policy on Contraception and Abortion in England and Wales (1993). Doctors in England follow guidelines produced by the General Medical Council (1991a; 1991b), and by the British Medical Association (1988).
