ALLERGY AND SEX: REACTIONS TO LUBRICANTS AND SEXUAL AIDS

If you are using lubricating jelly, stop for a while to see if it improves your symptoms. Ask for internal examinations and smear tests to be done without jelly. The most common jelly used is KY Jelly which contains propylene glycol, known to cause reactions. Or try using an alternative lubricant, Replens, available from pharmacies. Some people tolerate this if they have become sensitive to KY. Use the Sniff Test or Patch Test to see if you react.

If you are using sexual aids of any kind, stop for a while to see if your symptoms improve, and stop using them permanently if they are the cause of reactions.

If you are allergic to pets and animals, or to house dust mites, you may get reactions if you make love on a surface where pets often sleep or rest, or which are full of dust mites – such as a carpet, rug, sofa, car seat or bedcover. Cover surfaces with a clean cloth or towel, or try somewhere else.
